Despite the fact the mole lives almost its entire life under ground it is a pretty certain we all know what one look like. Whilst we are all familiar with the heaps of spoil from their tunnelling exploits it is, sadly, usually only when a dead one surfaces that we actually get to see one.
When you do see one, even a dead one like this poor soul, you see how wonderfully adapted they are for their subterranean life style. They have large and very strong front feet for clawing their way through the earth, a pointed face and small eyes, and a smooth, velvet-like, fur covering; all an asset for living under ground. I think they have a very gentle face but they are fiercely aggressive creatures and will fight any intruder that happens to cross tunnels with them.
Living under ground there is a limited food supply for them to live on and earth worms are their primary prey but they also eat other underground creatures such as beetle larvae and millipedes.
You often see groups of mole hills on soft roadside verges. I do worry though about them banging their heads on the tarmac should they try and surface from under the road itself!
